WE MISS YOU PRESIDENT CORY

To millions of Filipinos like me, the month of August will forever be marked as a life-changing period in our history as a democracy loving people. On August 21, 1983 Benigno Aquino Jr., a leading figure in the political opposition against then President Ferdinand Marcos was killed when he returned to his country after living for three years in the United States, where he was reunited with his family after being incarcerated for seven years as a political prisoner. His martyrdom ignited massive demonstrations against President Marcos, and eventually led to the installation in 1986 of his widow, Corazon C. Aquino, as the first female president of the Philippines and the first female president of any country in Asia.

Twenty-six years after her husband's assassination, Corazon Aquino sadly passed away due to a cardio-respiratory arrest after complications of colon cancer on August 1, 2009, 3:18 a.m., at the Makati Medical Center. She was 76.

ICON OF DEMOCRACY

The unique way by which our beloved President Aquino assumed the presidency was through a peaceful revolution known worldwide as the EDSA Revolution, which won her international fame as an icon of democracy. Her presidential term saw the enactment of a new Constitution, which effectively restored the democratic institutions in the Philippines. It limited the powers of the presidency and restored the bicameral Congress. Though her administration was hampered by several military coup attempts and major natural disasters, which derailed a complete economic recovery, she survived these trials through her steely determination and unconditional faith.

When she completed her presidential term in 1992, she did not seek another government office, but chose once again to be a private citizen. This did not stop her from speaking out on political issues and from continuing her advocacies. Aside from overseeing social welfare projects through the Benigno S. Aquino Foundation, President Aquino also led the PinoyME Foundation, a non-profit organization involved in microfinance. She was also a strong influence in the EDSA People Power Commission, and the People Power Movement, two groups that advocate good governance.

President Aquino was the recipient of several awards and citations, even after her presidency. These include the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding in 1996, which recognized her achievements along with those of Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela; citations from Time Magazine as one of the 20 Most Influential Asians of the 20th century given in 1999, and as one of 65 great Asian Heroes, along with Mahatma Gandhi, Deng Xiaoping, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Lee Kuan Yew (the same magazine named her the 1986 Woman of the Year). The recent issue of TIME Magazine dubbed President Aquino as the "Saint of Democracy".

Whether as national leader or as Citizen Cory, the self-proclaimed 'plain housewife' and 'widow in yellow' made us Filipinos proud not only once, but several times. President Aquino has so much good influence to all of us Filipinos. The book by Karol Ladd entitled "The Power of a Positive Woman" has all the intrinsic qualities of President Aquino - roled into one. Our beloved President can indeed be called, A woman of Faith, Wisdom, Prayer, Love, Courage, Hope & Joy. She has been our role model and a proof herself that with faith and courage, anything can be possible.

BATTLE WITH THE BIG C

In early 2008, President Aquino or Tita Cory as she was fondly called by Filipinos, was reported to have suffered from high blood pressure, followed by fever and cough. She had noticeably lost weight because of poor appetite. A series of medical tests unfortunately confirmed her family's worst fear. In March 24, 2008, her youngest daughter, actress / TV host and Queen of all Media, Kris Aquino, made an announcement that her mother had colon cancer. With her brother Sen. Benigno Aquino III by her side, she requested for prayers for her quick recovery.

The announcement came as a complete shock because Tita Cory was highly visible in public masses and rallies shortly before her health condition was made public. Yet, in true Cory fashion, she accepted the news of her illness and entrusted her health to God's healing power. In crisis, she continued to be strong. She kept her unwavering faith.

President Aquino was born on January 25, 1933, 10:00 p.m. Her path chee shows that she is a marginally strong Metal personality with characteristic as elegant, refined, polite and gifted with plenty of intelligence and creativity element. Being a strong metal element, she was able to utilize this intelligence and eloquence to speak and convince others about her viewpoint. She would have plenty of children, students or supporters. She had plenty of Earth element, which was her resource and support element, signifying a family that provided her with a good education. President Cory is born both with the so called "General Star" and "Nobleman Star" which would mean that she is courageous with good political authority. She will always receive support and help from peers, mentors and family members.

With the health hazard star in the hour pillar, there would have been some health issues. This would have increased the Earth element in her chart to an excessive level and may have brought about cellular growth issues. Her favorable elements are Water, Fire and Wood while her unfavorable elements are Earth and Metal. Thus, this year of the Earth Ox 2009, being a double Earth year, is a challenging period for our beloved leader, with Earth being an unfavorable element according to her natal chart.

Last July 2009, President Aquino had to be confined at the Makati Medical Center. It was announced that she was in very serious condition and that her family had decided to stop chemotheraphy because she was too weak. At about this time, the entire country came together in offering prayers and masses for another miracle, this time for her complete recovery.

In early July, my friend, Kris Aquino-Yap requested me to further analyze the most challenging dates for Pres. Cory during July and August. I explained to her that we are not God and things like this, we can not really tell when is the time. But, with a heavy heart, I prepared a summary of challenging dates for President Cory, from 8 July 8 16 August 2009. Among the inauspicious days listed were July 8, 22, 23, and 25, because these were days which were in conflict with her animal sign and the elements related to it. I remember highlighting another date, August 1, because it was an extremely strong Earth day, month and year pillar clashing and the Tiger day is clashing with her Monkey sign.

In the early morning of August 1, 2009, one of my staff sent me an SMS saying that our beloved former president was indeed gone forever. As I was reading the message on my phone, I felt my knees wobble and I was lucky I did not fall off the stairs. It was like I was having a bad dream. But I wasn't. The time of death, 3:18 a.m., is also a Tiger hour thus clashing with the Monkey, Pres. Cory's animal sign. I realized that the destiny reading fits but deep in my heart, and for once in my life, I wish it wasn't.

TITA CORY'S LAST DAYS

On 2 August 2009 at the wake of the former president, Kris broke her silence and decided to speak for the "first and last time" about her last days with her mother. This was aired in the nationally popular showbiz-oriented TV show, "The Buzz", which she co-hosts with her good friend - the King of Talk, Boy Abunda. It left many viewers teary-eyed and included the following:

  • "If you ask me what my most painful memory was, it was July 8 [Wednesday]. I'm glad I was there with my sister Pinky, because it was the first time mom broke down. It was the first time na umiyak talaga ang mom. Siguro sa tindi ng sakit... sa realization that she's going to miss us...and it's so hard. (It was the first time that she really cried. Maybe because of the intense pain...because of the realization...)"
  • "July 22, Wednesday. Her pain was so much worse. Nag-insert na kami ng catheter kasi hirap na siya tumayo to be able to go to the bathroom. (We inserted a catheter because she couldn't stand up anymore to be able to go to the bathroom)."
  • "I knew that night was the turning point. So, the next day - Thursday, July 23 - si Dr. Francis again was explaining to me, 'Kris, yung Demerol na binibigay sa mom [mo]... yung level n'yan can lead to a seizure.'(Kris, the Demerol that is being administered to your mom... that level can lead to a seizure).

My husband and I had a chance to visit the wake of Tita Cory at La Salle Greenhills in Manila before she was transferred to the Manila Cathedral. Here in the Philippines, we all miss our beloved President Cory so much. She was an inspiration to us at a time when the nation faced serious troubles. She is indeed destined to be remembered as one of the greatest Filipinos who ever lived, and loved.

My calling revolves around working with the elements of nature to achieve harmony and possibly overcome challenges. There are times, however, when no amount of harmonizing could reverse what has to be and we all must yield to a Higher Force. In times like these, even if we wished things turned out differently, we can only submit to the Divine Will and thank God for the gift of a life well-lived. President Cory is gone but she left a legacy of love, hope, and courage. It's now up to us Filipinos to keep that legacy alive.
