Feng Shui for Beginners

October 10, 2009

When we are tired from a long day, our bedrooms are our sanctuariesthat envelop, heal, and invigorate us to face a brand new start thenext day. Sometimes though, our rooms deplete us more than they repleteus.

With a few feng shui (pong suy in Filipino) tweaks, ourbedrooms can turn into positive energy-inviting spaces conducive to ahealthier and more harmonious life:

De-cluttering is key," Marites Allen, feng shui expertand President and CEO of The World Of Feng Shui (WOFS) boutiques inManila, says. Contrary to common perception, “feng shui is very easy topractice-it is quite simple, and [just follows plain] common sense." Wecan start with cleaning our room and removing trash and everydayclutter to remove stagnant energy.

Let air circulate. A well-ventilated room, especially one withwindows, is a must. “Every so often, especially in the morning as soonas [you] wake up, let the [fresh] air come inside. At the same time, you let the stagnant air from your bedroom out, as well," keeping thepositive energy flowing in.

Remove distractions. Marites believes that the bedroom is reallya place for an “intimate time for [the] self or with a loved one where[for the latter] you can just direct your energy and attention towardone another." As such, interruptions and distractions should beminimized. Loud equipment like the television set, for example, is abig no-no.

A bedroom is what a room with a bed makes. A “simple bed withclean-smelling good beddings-perhaps a bedside table where you have areading light to use, and a few selected books that you wish to readbefore dozing off to bed," are what Marites recommends. Always rememberthat the bedroom is really the place to relax and sleep.

Enhancers. After ensuring that the bedroom is a clean and neathaven once again, we can then add feng shui “enhancers" to help usattract whatever good vibes we want. Marites mentions that figurines ofWolu and a pair of mandarin ducks, for example, can be put on thebedside table to promote health and longevity or love and romance, respectively.
